1. How does Jagua work?

1.1. How does Jagua work?
JaguaHenna™ tattoo gel dyes the skin into a dark blue/black color which will last for 10-20 days.
Exposure to air (oxidation) activates the gel which gives you a 100% natural tattoo.

1.2. Is it really a two week tattoo!?
Absolutely! And everything is safe and natural. :-)
JaguaHenna™ tattoos will gradually fade as your skin regenerates. The tattoo will last for 10-20 days due to this process.

1.3. Will the tattoo show up well on dark skin?
Absolutely. Either dark or light, Jagua will create a beautiful distinct stain.
Generally, the tattoo tends to black on a dark skin whereas it will be dark blue on light skin.

3. Tattoo lifespan & protection

3.1. How long does it need to dry?

Just don’t forget to remove the gel before going to bed. This will prevent smudging your precious design!

Don't worry!
Your tattoo needs time to develop. It takes 12 – 24 hours for your tattoo to reach its peak darkness.

3.3. How long will my tattoo last?
JaguaHenna™ tattoos will last 10 – 20 days.

3.4. Can I expose my tattoo to water?
Absolutely! Just be careful while scrubbing and wiping it dry as this will increase fading.

By taking the right precautions you can enjoy your tattoo for two weeks.
Basically, you need to take care of your skin:

  • Avoid friction and scrubbing.
  • While showering and swimming; be careful with washing the tattoo-area and gently pat it dry.
  • Protect the tattoo with a thin layer of petroleum jelly (or something similar) while swimming, bathing, showering and sleeping.
  • Enjoying nice weather? Protect the tattoo with suntan lotion.
  • Avoid dehydration of the skin.
  • Drink plenty of water.

3.6. What if I want to remove my Jagua tattoo?

5. Product information

5.1. What is Jagua exactly?
JaguaHenna™ is a 2 week tattoo gel made of 100% natural ingredients. JaguaHenna™ creates a dark blue/black tattoo that lasts for 10 – 20 days. Jagua (Genipa Americana) is derived from a fruit that grows in the rainforests of Central- and South America. These fruits are also used for traditional jams, desserts and beverages. Due to its antibacterial and antibiotic properties it even helps against colds, sore throats, bronchitis, and other illnesses!

5.2. What tattoo color does it give?
Black with a hint of Dark blue. The exact color depends on your specific skin type.

5.3. Does Jagua come in other colors?
Unfortunately no. Jagua will only dye the skin Dark blue / black..

5.4. How does the gel color the skin?
The colorless Jagua juice (Genipa Americana) oxidizes when exposed to air. This oxidation process is the reason that your skin can gradually darken. So, after our tattoo gel touches the skin for ~2.5 hours, it will take 12 – 24 hours before the tattoo will reach its most intense color.

5.5. What is JaguaHenna™ shelf life?
FREEZE JAGUAHENNA™ AT -20 DEGREES! This way, Jagua gel will preserve its staining capacity for 12 months.
When used within 30 days, freezing is solely recommended but not required.
Oxidation (exposure to air) will activate the gel. Before storing the tubes: squeeze out excessive air, seal by using the plug and screw on the cap.
Contact with oxygen and improper storage conditions will reduce Jagua staining properties.

5.6. How often can I freeze & thaw Jagua?
FREEZE JAGUAHENNA™ AT -20 DEGREES!
You can freeze and thaw JaguaHenna many times as the deteriorating effect is negligible. Just be sure to freeze immediately after you’re finished using the gel!
However, to avoid unnecessary thawing, it might be wise to repack large bottles in smaller containers.

5.7. How long does it take to thaw the gel?
Thawing a 10ml tube will take about 30 minutes.

5.8. What is the origin of Jagua?
Our Jagua fruits are collected by indigenous people from the Panamanian rainforests. Each tribe has his own methods of creating Jagua tattoos with which they create intricate patterns for ceremonies and parties. They’ve used the Jagua fruits for hundreds of years and passed on their knowledge from generation to generation.

Our first acquaintance with Jagua took place deep in the Amazonian rainforests. These local tribes shared their stories and traditions and told us about the importance of Jagua during their daily lives. So basically, thanks to the natives of Southern America, you can finally enjoy safe, temporary tattoos!

5.9. How is Jagua different from ‘traditional’ henna?

  • JaguaHenna will dye the skin dark blue/black for 2 weeks.
  • ‘Traditional’ Henna will dye the skin red/brown. There is no such thing as safe Black Henna.
  • Traditional Henna has been used for centuries throughout the Middle-East and Asia.
  • Jagua has been used for centuries by the local tribes of Central and South America.

6. Health & Safety

6.1. Is Jagua safe?
JaguaHenna™ tattoo gel is a safe cosmetic product that can be applied directly on the skin.
Our formula is developed according to European Cosmetic Regulations 1223/2009.
JaguaHenna™ gel DOES NOT contain PPD or other dangerous chemicals.

Nonetheless, to prevent allergic reactions or irritation, we always recommend to test Jagua on a small patch of skin before applying the tattoo.
Since 2015 we’ve sold thousands of Jagua products and have only experienced a few cases of allergic reactions. Our records show that 99.8% of customers won’t experience problems. Although unlikely, if allergic reactions do occur, an eczema-like rash appears after a couple of days. When treated adequately, such a reaction will not create lasting scars. Simply remove the tattoo by repeatedly washing the area & gently rubbing dry. Don’t scratch and/or damage the skin! Doctors recommended that the rash can also be treated by applying anti-itch cream. However, avoid self-treatment, contact us immediately, and always consult a medical professional when in need.

6.2. What is JaguaHenna™ gel made of?
Our JaguaHenna™ formula contains – besides the fruit juice of Genipa Americana – a thickener (Xanthan gum), preservative (Potassium Sorbate), Citric Acid and Olive oil.
Al these ingredients are harmless and are also used in food products.

6.3. Can anyone use Jagua?
As some people are allergic to fruit or peanuts, it can occur that people are sensitive to Jagua. We do not recommend the use of Jagua gel for people with fruit-allergies, eczema, extremely sensitive skin and/or G6PD. To prevent allergic reactions or irritations, test Jagua on a small patch of skin before applying the tattoo. The tattoo can be drawn without a problem if you’re not experiencing any irritation within 15 – 120 minutes.

+ Read more on Health & Safety

6.4. Does it hurt?
Absolutely not! Your Jagua tattoo is 100% pain free.

6.5. Why use a needle when it's for external use only?
True, JaguaHenna™ is exclusively for external use. We provide blunt needles to create detailed drawings on the skin.
This accompanying needle is blunt and simply clicks into JaguaHenna™ tubes. Basically, it's a Click & Go system :-)

6.6. How is Jagua different from Black Henna?
JaguaHenna™ is NOT black henna. Please be aware of Black Henna products! These products are made of traditional henna mixed with the chemical substance ParaPhenyleneDiamine (PPD). This PPD poluted henna is dangerous and can cause blisters and scars. Do not use these products!

Jagua is the ONLY safe product that gives you a dark blue/black temporary tattoo. Our products do not contain these chemical substances.
Our JaguaHena™ products are carefully researched, developed and produced.
Because of this, always ask Jagua artists whether they can show appropriate JaguaHenna™ documentation.
